I agree in concept.
However, many of the people at the farmers markets these days are just selling the imperfect fruits and vegetables that the supermarkets sold in bulk to secondary suppliers at discount because they aren't pretty on the shelf due to imperfections or are overstocked. then, the buyers pretend to be local farmers and mark them up above what the store would have normally sold them for. "it's imperfect because it came from my humble little farm".
I know because I used to work at a weekly market as a kid. a lot of it (not all) is 100% a scam though.
This is why you need to be really careful about what they sell you. It's a common tactic for the customer to point at a fruit or vegetable on display and then the worker reaches behind the counter and hands you something of less quality.
The farmer's market where I'm at is a legitimate small farm. All their produce tastes better than the store's. Haven't tried their meat yet but I want to.
