This is a symptom. You don't cure a disease by treating symptoms poorly. Campaign contributions must be strictly controlled. NO foreign money must ever flow into the coffers of a politician running for office. If it does, the politician and their staff must be executed for treason. People with dual citizenship cannot donate to political campaigns. Those that donate to political campaigns must be audited, and if they received funding from foreign interests, those people must be executed for treason and money laundering. Politicians must not benefit financially from their position. They should not be allowed to buy individual stocks, commodities, or any other financial instrument other than passive index type investments. They should not be allowed to own stakes in private companies, or accept any private money at least until 5 years after they leave public office. Foreign or opaque ownership of media companies must be outlawed. Only US citizens should be able to own media companies, an the ownership must be direct. No "investment funds" may invest in media companies. Only individuals. The capitalization tables of media companies must be public information. No individual should own more than a 5% stake in any media company. Media companies cannot be subsidiaries of other companies. Employees of regulatory agencies must be prohibited from working in the same industry until five years after their position in a regulatory authority ends. They must be prohibited from investing or gaining financially from the industry they regulate until five years after their position ends, upon penalty of death. That's a start. It will require one hell of a political upheaval to get back to sane, more benevolent government. We need a fresh start.
