This woman realized that places that have a bunch of plastics and pollution should have evolved bacteria that can eat it. So she went to some oil superfund sites and grabbed bacteria to test. It turns out that a bunch of varieties of bacteria can do so, and she isolated a few that are particularly good at it. They want to push that 'the science' solved the problem.
