*Off The Grid* means you're living in a way that society is not able to extract financial benefit from your existence. As in, growing your own food, collecting your own water, supplying your own solar power, processing your own waste, etc... Living fully self-sustainably and off the grid means you're not paying taxes on revenue, and if more people see you and decide to live off the grid as well, the government is losing money, ergo you're not free to live in such a way that value can't extracted from you, lest others mimic you and realize they don't need to contribute to the government's coffers.
