I think those excerpts are more an introspect on how he saw life growing up, both his parents were 'White trash' alcoholic/ drug addicts living in trailer parks and in and out of jail/ prison until him and his sister were finally taken away iirc and eventually adopted.
It's also supposedly why he changed him surname from his birth-parents 'Bowman' to the adopting family surname 'Vance'
