As a Eurofag, the concept of credit card debt is completely alien to me.

Debt on my bank account, yes I had that some decades ago. The usury rate per year for that is about 10% currently.

I got a credit card for my trip to the US because I was told you need one there but here it's debit cards which get charged to your account almost immediately. Rarely use mine though, apart from pulling cash from an ATM every 8 weeks or so, to be able to pay with the closest approximation of real money. The credit card I still use very occasionally to pay for stuff I order from the US or other countries.

Are debit cards no option in the US? They sure seem to help with financial discipline.

They are and are common. But people lack discipline. And (((they))) try to entice you with introductory zero interest, airline miles and cash back for spending etc.

And while you CAN actually do pretty good with with your rewards progrsms if you pay then off in total every month so no interest accrues, so many people, especially young people, just don't have the discipline.

Canadian's have been using debit cards for decades, I'm sure it's the same in the US . That's interesting that Europeans don't use credit cards. Do you not buy online either?

I shop online quite a bit. For me personally, it's mostly SEPA direct bank transfers. PayPal and the occasional invoice payable after delivery.

Crypto is reserved for payments to dissidents, which was the main reason for buying some about 9 years ago. Debanking was a thing back then already and I could smell what was brewing.
