Aren't blankets a thing?
Blankets would be slippery on a metal roof. Foam (like sofa cushons) works great, really grabs on.
When I clean my father's skylights or use the leaf blower to get the schmutz off the roof, I always wear my climbing approach shoes. They have really great sticky tread which works perfectly up there.
