The donors only want to give money to the one they can control. Their fear of donating while Trump is so far ahead is very telling. Also interesting is that Republican fundraiser Levine doesn't want Trump.

I don’t think there’s real strength behind those numbers

he expected Mr. Trump’s legal troubles to weigh him down, and that he believed most voters were looking for a second choice.

If anything his poll numbers have always been low.
