Missed this post a while back (It's archived now) but wanted to answer.

Oversized loads pay for permits for every state they drive through. Those permits tell them what routes to take, how many and what type of escorts (private escorts, police escorts, etc.) they require, and time of day they are allowed to drive. 99% of the time, oversized are only allowed to drive daytime hours.

They most likely took up two lanes (with what I assume was a long ass I-beam) at curvy areas because the rear tandems don't track directly behind the truck. They're going to track into the other lane around left hand curves.

Basically, they're just doing the job at the time your state required them to do it and with the escorts doing what your state requires them to do. Most oversized drivers would love to maximize their clocks by driving at night. It would also bring their blood pressure down a bit by avoiding all the pissed off drivers that spend more than 2 minutes behind them.
