How do the brakes go out on big rigs? Dont they use air pressure for brakes? I know they can burn them out going down hill. Maybe thats what happened.

The brake pads actually get so hot that they begin to melt at which point the coefficient of friction goes to zero.

They actually dont. Brakes "failing" is always driver error. Either they got them too hot or they weren't adjusted correctly which should be noticed and corrected during pre trip. In the event the air supply fails, the spring brakes will automatically be applied.

Trucks and trailers have been required to have this since 97 if I remember right.
