Lighting is an area where the the old saying "quality over quantity" truly shines. More light is not always better.
BG lights can be good in dimmer, warmer tones, higher up and further back in the room.
Spotlights are good for entryways, nightstands, desks and countertops.
A good way to maximize light on a budget is to put one in a corner of the room, allowing most of the light to reflect off of two walls.

Ironically, they spent large amounts of money researching how to make bulbs have better planned obsolescence to make people have to buy more of them!
