It's worth pointing out, the reason the temperance movement got legs is because women were abused. But this was almost exclusively an urban immigrant issue and disproportionately Irish. That's not to say abuse didn't happen elsewhere. But the vast majority of women were well taken care, much loved, and enjoyed a fulfilled life. Which was returned from their children.
