Another reason not related to nutrition is that the act of breastfeeding is much more intimate between mother and baby because it's time spent together, and there is more skin on skin contact. Children that feel loved and supported generally go on to do much better as adults, than children that were either abandoned or didn't get as much attention when they were little, leading to feelings of abandonment, low self esteem, etc.
