The real problem is that the framers of the Constitution failed to include any terms for states who CHOSE to join - to freely separate from the confederation/republic. For lack of one damned sentence, the Constitution failed us all. The Constitution was supposed to be a voluntary contract by which the states could trade, mint common coinage and to stand in mutual defense should the need ever arise. A million brave boys died for lack of a sentence. The Confederate government was little better. Top-heavy political systems all abuse the people. It was a terrible time.
