I thought you were offering yours.
I got to see my older brother today.
He is my half-brother, and older than me and my other older brother by a decent margin.
The entire reason I went on this vacation was for him. Today is his 50th birthday.
He doesn't look it, though. If you saw him on the streets, you'd probably assume late thirties.
He is a real hard, gentle dude. A marine who manages a high-end strip club down south.
That perfect mixture of soft-spoken tones and congeniality backed up with the knowledge that he is totally capable of dealing with any situation that comes his way. I don't see him to often, and sometimes I forget how much I admire him.
Our mother rented a big house down the shore. Really, a very large house, Victorian in style. The epitome of class. I don't know how I could ever thank her for this, but I know she was happy to have all of her boys under one roof, me, my two brothers, and my nephews.
We also had a large contingent of family friends joining us.
My mother made us all Paella. It was delicious.
Afterwards, we sat out on the porch, myself and my two brothers.
My oldest half-brother, i didn't really grow up with at all. He was already off to the marines when I was born.
But it is truly and oddly weird how easy it is to catch up with somebody you share blood with.
He told us about a lot of things. He told us about his father, who he only met once, as an adult, when he was maybe 35, at the behest of our mom.
He told us about how seeing this man for the first time infuriated him. How he could look upon this stranger and see all of his bad qualities, as though he was looking in a mirror. Everything he hated about himself, just there.
During the one time he actually met his 'father', the guy attempted to give him fatherly advice, despite abandoning him and my mother. Mind you, this man did get married and raise two children, and has a successful career as a judge.
Why'd my brother get left out?
I don't know his name, and I don't think I would ever want to, because I think I am as nice as my brother is.
My brother also told me about a marriage my mother had that we didn't know about. I'll let those sleeping dogs lay down.
More interesting, was when he told us about how our mother first met our father, and how he banned the TV from their room, saying that it rots your brain.
We don't have a good relationship with our father, but he did have a good point.
I'm not really going anywhere with this, i just hope you are all doing well, and appreciate your family when you do get to see them. They're the only people you can truly count on.
Regards,
-Theo
