When I was younger I didn't consider it to be coming from me, and it didn't speak as if it was me; it spoke as if it were something else talking to me.
I now consider it to be part of myself. Perhaps it connects me to more of the universe in a way. You have different fingers which are all part of your hand. Your toes aren't part of your hand, but your fingers and toes are all parts of your body.
Is your blood a part of you? What a about the oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood? What about the air in your lungs? Is your breath a part of you? Maybe you don't start and end within some clearly marked black and white boundary.
I interact with different people in my dreams. Surely my brain is generating all these people, and I view them as parts of myself, though they aren't really me. And what my brain generates is at least partially determined by the information it gets from outside.
So, I don't think it's as simple as having communication from an external entity. But if the brain can generate one stream of consciousness, maybe it can generate others. These entities may be birthed into your head after your mind has been impregnated from outside influences.
