She could have anyone
But she doesn't want anyone
She wants me
All flaws and scribbled mistakes

I could have anyone
But I don't want anyone
I want you
An elusive dream of yesterday

You could have anyone
But you don't want anyone
You want him
A drug to ease your aching existence

He could have anyone
But he doesn't want anyone
He wants the future
Stretching his reach to exceed his grasp

The future will have us all
Gravely welcoming
Showing the folly of want
And replacing want with rest

Man, this one really hits close to home.

Reminds me of myself.

And my ex.

And both the future, and the past

As this was the thesis statement for a as yet unwritten collection of some twenty poems; I thought I was going to write about four characters in the throws of emotional upheaval. I came to find, as I imagine so many writers before me have, that I was only writing myself in so many disguises.

I'm glad that you could find some connection to it. Lately I think the author is as much a stranger to me as I am to you.

Edit: I'll dig deep this week for the motivation to upload the PDF of this book. I'm rather proud of having written so quickly to a quality which I'm not ashamed. I'd rather not doxx my pen name as it's publicly tied to people that may take exception. A little editing shouldn't take long. It's just a matter of doing it, you know.
