UPCs are two dimensional in shape but only one dimensional in data storage. A QR code is a 2D barcode, both in shape and data storage. 2D barcodes can store a lot more data which is why they are switching. The UPC can only contain a single numerical code that is also printed in numbers below it. The new 2D code will not give you any indication on what data is in it by human readable means. Gone will be the days of easily seeing if a product comes from israel so you can choose another brand instead.
