Hummm... First off, I'm assuming they hooked up a travel trailer and not an RV? Reading on, looks like it was a small camper. Yeah, that adds a lot of air resistance, never mind the weight. Second, this will be a problem for any electric vehicle - but there is a potential solution. Add a supplementary battery pack to your trailer and a way to hook it up to the vehicle.
