They aren't 'simple', their lives are filled with reality and work and keeping up with the real world.
It's you and me (eh mostly you) who are simple by focusing on politics and a culture war that we can't change. Your neighbors change it all the time in their own neighborhoods and personal relationships. Their lives are full and deep
I guess I wasn't very clear about what I meant about empty/simple. They are so drunk the moment they get home until they pass out, get up and drink themselves silly again the next day after work, except the one who is retired he just starts again daily. It's a regular thing, I've never seen them not shitfaced in six months. I don't know how you can carry on through life wasted all the time and feel like you're not missing something. It's very carefree. Something I couldn't do since I would feel irresponsible.
I don't really focus on politics and culture; I've been digging into history as much as I can. We spend a lot of time helping neighbors and cultivating friendships as well.
For being drunk. Shit I was drunk for my entire 20's and yes it's a wasted life i'm convinced my memory is shit because of it, so you have a good point there.
As for history i've been digging myself--in particular Alternative History and it's borderline depressing and incredible reading all the shit that we have been lied about.

Wow, great response and exactly correct. Every time I read a post like this I think the same.
Pessimism like all things can destroy your future and OP didn't clarify his statement well, apparently his neighbors are drunks which would make his statement valid. However, often his Urban point of view looks down on the rural folk as backwards when at the end of the day it's OP who is backwards.
ON the drunk question, I have to question his statements because our Founding Fathers were and yet accomplished alot.

Couldn't be that deep. If they pay taxes they are slaves and probably don't realize it. Once you realize it there's no going back, and there can be no contentment.
