They get too drunk but don't do anyone any harm. "Good ol boys." They'll help you with any chores about your house, like digging trenches or moving trees with their tractors.

They also don't have a thought in their heads about what's going on with society.

Their week is, work so I can go home and have a drink and laugh/act like a fool.

I stood in mixed admiration and horror tonight as I witnessed just how empty(simple?) they all were. I don't know if I should feel sad that I'm not the same so I can fit in better, or be glad to be on the outside looking in. They sure as shit don't know that they're missing anything. Perhaps I should stop reading and just be simple, too. But I don't think I can. I've always had the thirst, the need to know.

I witnessed just how empty(simple?) they all were.

They aren't 'simple', their lives are filled with reality and work and keeping up with the real world.

It's you and me (eh mostly you) who are simple by focusing on politics and a culture war that we can't change. Your neighbors change it all the time in their own neighborhoods and personal relationships. Their lives are full and deep

I guess I wasn't very clear about what I meant about empty/simple. They are so drunk the moment they get home until they pass out, get up and drink themselves silly again the next day after work, except the one who is retired he just starts again daily. It's a regular thing, I've never seen them not shitfaced in six months. I don't know how you can carry on through life wasted all the time and feel like you're not missing something. It's very carefree. Something I couldn't do since I would feel irresponsible.

I don't really focus on politics and culture; I've been digging into history as much as I can. We spend a lot of time helping neighbors and cultivating friendships as well.

For being drunk. Shit I was drunk for my entire 20's and yes it's a wasted life i'm convinced my memory is shit because of it, so you have a good point there.

As for history i've been digging myself--in particular Alternative History and it's borderline depressing and incredible reading all the shit that we have been lied about.

For example, Lincoln was never assasinated. Crazy right? Well here is the proof: chrome-extension://oemmndcbldboiebfnladdacbdfmadadm/http://mileswmathis.com/lincoln.pdf

It's a PDF from a trusted source. Miles also made a compelling argument for John Lennon faking his murder as well. I'll let you find that one yourself. It's crazy how much of History is fake.

Wow, great response and exactly correct. Every time I read a post like this I think the same.

Pessimism like all things can destroy your future and OP didn't clarify his statement well, apparently his neighbors are drunks which would make his statement valid. However, often his Urban point of view looks down on the rural folk as backwards when at the end of the day it's OP who is backwards.

ON the drunk question, I have to question his statements because our Founding Fathers were and yet accomplished alot.

Clearly moderation in life is important, however, neighbors being neighborly and not paying attention to the news in itself is not a crime

Couldn't be that deep. If they pay taxes they are slaves and probably don't realize it. Once you realize it there's no going back, and there can be no contentment.

I always like reading you and your husband's life together. I'm happy that two gay men can live such a traditional lifestyle in modern America.

I had good neighbors last night. Went camping. This guy from the camp over handed me a pouch of birch bark and cattail. I thought I would try it and it worked great. Cool dude.

I think it's people who struggle to find purpose with their lives, that stumble across the truth, or care about the state of things bigger than you like national and international politics. They don't seek it out intentionally, but find it along the way.

The ones that are always busy generally have a purpose of sorts in their careers or family, and feel no need to seek out anything else.

I didn't pay any attention to politics while I was a student, because I had my goal of finishing my degree, getting a job and finally having enough cash to start enjoying my life. It wasn't until I'd gotten that job, realised it was all an illusion, a promise, and a false hope, that I started looking for something greater.

Ignorance is bliss, I envy people who can be content with the world and feel no need to fight for it. Some of us are born to build families and neighborhoods ultimately communities. Some of us are born to fight.
