It's all good - until you have to spend Winter in Houghton. Almost accepted a scholarship there. Chose elsewhere based in no small part on the UP weather. In the day, the best mining degree programs were in Houghton MI, Rolla MO, Butte MT and Golden CO. Lower tier in Socorro NM, Reno NV and Fairbanks AK. Believe SD had one too, but it was terminated in the mid 80s. Was also offered a free tuition and books scholarship to Fairbanks way back then. Problem was room and board there was insanely expensive - and I can only imagine what 7 solid months of Winter would be like there.
