Yeah, last month Mrs. Duck's credit card bought weed at some shop in Los Angeles while seemingly tucked away in her wallet in Missouri. Caught it on the bill. Less than $20, and only one charge. Card company ate it.
Great reminder. Glad you caught it,
I have everything set to alert on anything - and that's for this very reason.
I like to leave all my accounts in a negative status just for this. ;)
Bold move.
How do they manage to do that? Credit card info leaks and then they use that somehow?
What a wonderful world, need to watch our backs all the time.
It's hard to tell where it leaked. It could have been at the auto parts shop I went to earlier, or any one of a number of online vendors.
In my experience, it could be almost anywhere - unless you seriously shield your cards. Over the past 30 years I've experienced card fraud 8 times. I strongly suspected where one got hacked, and was almost certain on one other. But mostly it's just like a fart in the wind.
That's the reason I have all online accounts set to notify me of any transaction. $0.01? I want to know about it because that's a card test amount.
Ever get to thinking that bank and credit card company employees just randomly peruse their client's accounts, pick one, and buy shit they want? I do. That's why I'm unbanked and will remain so.
I'm sure it happens.
Along with them "accidentally" charging millions of people an extra dollar or something in fees, knowing most people won't notice it, and of the fre who notice, few of them will sit on hold for an hour to get one dollar refunded.
privacy.com lets you create cards per-vendor or one-time-use for online and such, or set monthly, yearly, etc limits on a card. You can pause, stop, delete them at any time.
If you are the type to use your phone to pay (I have never done that) they have an app that lets you use a one-time-card there too.
I have already had more than one card "popped" while using the service and most of them were used only one time at one location but I was sent an alert that someone attempted to use it. I have no idea how they would have gotten the details but it has saved me a lot of time dealing with getting new cards and re-doing all of my bills and such.
Check them out if you are interested in something like this. They have been around for a while.
