So I got to work, and instantly noticed that the entire building smelled like death. I head over to the office to meet with the day crew to find out what the fuck is going on. Get told "A rat died gnawed into the piping back in the 4th closet, and died somewhere in the piping. We think it's closer to your side, but not sure." Lovely, I think. 70 year old building, this shit happens since they built em way different back then. Hell, I'm convinced our electrician was Canadian due to the weird ways the wiring was done through this bitch.

So I get to work, changing out bulbs and ballasts, when all of a sudden I hear the fire alarm go off, and a rancid smell hits me 15 feet up in the air. I climb down the ladder and head into the hallway, only to be greeted by staff coughing and running for the exits. My boss had the bright idea to get the rat out by dissolving it with the most powerful sulfuric acid drain opener we could get from facilities. While, yes, it did work, now the building smelled like chemically cooked dead rat, and the drains in my section were smoking acrid smoke. And this was an hour into a 9 hour shift. Wound up spending a lot of my shift dumping water down the drains throughout the building to try and flush this shit out.

Well, I didn't dump the opener down the drain, I was just trying to mitigate the damage afterwards. Custodians don't tend to be the brightest bulbs, honestly. Had I been there, my first question would be if we could get a plumber to scope and snake it. if not, then yeah, I might have tried to chemical it out. But yeah, the building clears out fully by 5, would have been way smarter to do it then

Yeah, the scope/snake would have been my go-to first and chemical after...

I did a dumb with chemical in a personal residential and my plumber gave me the appropriate amount of shit and still did the job.

That guy got a really good tip and still works for the same place and I request him when work is needed. He knows, I know, Leave it to those that know what they are doing when you can. We hired them to completely re-do some stuff I simply don't have the time or skills to do. He got another good tip on that job too.

I appreciate people that do this. I can do plenty on my own but I have learned when to just call the pro unless there is no other option.

I FUCKING HATE plumbing/pipe work.

I have had to do some of it for a lot of stupid reasons but I am so happy to pay someone else that had everything on the truck and knows what the hell they are doing in 1/10th of the time.

I don't like driving all around town to try to rebuild the janky ass shit under my sink that some handy-man special rigged up 20 years ago and now I need so many odd fittings and crap I may as well just rebuild the damn thing from scratch.

I respect those guys.
