Yes and it's annoying as hell. Some ... but only some, can be opened in a 'Private Window' in Firefox which bypasses their nonsense. But even there, less are able to bypass the BS. Like you, I ignore the stories where I can't get it to open cleanly. Even on those that I can get in a private window, I won't post unless I can get it to archive, so all can open freely.
Which brings up another thing. Many sites are also making it difficult or impossible to create an archive copy. Again, there's no point in posting if others can't enjoy. And by enjoy I mean able to open and have a clear, readable text, not flooded with ads.
I'll use Space.com for example. They are cool enough to ask nicely to disable, so I like the site, I don't mind supporting it, but I tried disabling ad block and it was, wow wtf...
Now they give you an option to watch a video to support them. I can handle that. I think that is a good way to go. After all they do need to make money to run the site.
That's funny because I never have a problem at all with space.com. They occasionally ask if I would like to whitelist, but have an option to view without doing so. I always select that option and have never even gotten the video you spoke of. Maybe it's our ad blockers. I use AdBlock Plus in Firefox PC browser.
The video option is very new. I've been selecting the continue with adblocker (after I tried white listing and was appalled).
I'm using uBlock Origin in Waterfox.
