The protections for POWs in the Geneva conventions where written for actual soldiers, who put their lives on the line for their countries and people. Not for cowards hiding behind a screen, using pseudo-kamikaze tactics.

Drone pilots should be treated as unlawful combatants, to be indefinitely detained or worse if necessary. There is even a good legal justification for this. They don't technically wear uniforms when engaged in hostilities.

What about those firing missiles from hundreds/thousands miles away?

That's an interesting question. I'd say if the missile is fired from a ship (by someone on the ship) then they're a legitimate sailor.

If your scenario is enacted, the solution that the military will use will be to basically build Skynet.

They remain combatants, even if this insulated. This feels like a throw back to the treatment of snipers or artillerymen in enemy hands.

They do until proven otherwise (you have to capture them).
