The IT department at work was trying to fix a problem on one drive on my computer. (If you aren't a windows person, like I am not a windows person, one drive is microsoft's name for... ummm... some kind of remote network storage sort of thingy that is supposed to be more secure than having a local network on-site. Or something. We've been using it for 3ish years, and all I've seen it do is run the fans in the computer at warp 6 constantly because it is 'synchronizing.') A week before Christmas, I couldn't open a text file from a few years ago in My Documents. IT decided that meant one drive needed to be reset on my machine, so they disconnected and reconnected my machine to one drive. Or removed it and reinstalled it. When they did that, all the files on my desktop and in my documents vanished. "Don't worry, they'll come back when it finishes synchronizing." 12 hours and 1.7 million files later, it had restored exactly FIVE files to my documents and nothing to my desktop. Roughly 10 years of notes and projects and source code and spreadsheets that I've written, saved, accumulated... gone. ('member a few months ago, there was a post on here about next-level spreadsheets? Yeah - I'm one of those guys that likes to build those. This hurt.) They tried an older backup of one drive, but it had the same 5 files. Nothing else. Oh yeah... you know how you can always go back to a 'restore point' on windows? I suggested they try that. Yeah - they store those rollback files on one drive. And none of those 5 files are one of those restore points. In hindsight, I don't think it would have mattered, since one drive does things... differently. And since it re-synchronized, then this 1.2 terabyte blob has overwritten what was there prior, so there's no recovery. They blame me for not having it mapped correctly. Even though they set it up. Moving on... My adult daughter has not been a part of my life for nearly 20 years. She get cards and cash from me on the holidays, her birthday, and so on. Tried just a text instead of my usual long-winded letter. No response. Again. And... The current mess this country is in has really started hitting me hard lately. My kids... and yours... have a deep well to climb out of. If it is even possible at this point. Fortunately we live in a fairly rural suburb farm town, but even Mid West Ohio isn't too far from... Cincinnati, Columbus, Indy, etc. If the politics in this once-great nation don't destroy it completely, the blacks certainly will. Just today there was a shootout with the cops on the highway. At the intersection I use to and from work. And this intersection is 2 miles out of my way, but it lets me go around a different section of town that had gotten too bad for my taste... too many shootings. But, on the plus side, I'm a week porn free. Maybe not a big thing for most of you, but for me it is the shedding of the only real vise I had, and have had since I was old enough to appreciate my old man's copy of Playboy with Candy Loving as the centerfold. (Fuck I'm old.) Funny thing, that's the one thing I don't feel stressed about. Anyway, I'm in a shitty mood, and could use some... Encouragement? A stupid joke?
