It comes from people not learning the value of money/work. If you grow up having an easy life and everything is always given to you... You think money just "shows up" and will "always be there" so you spend without thinking.
If you actually have to learn the value of work and have to pay bills or skip a meal because you are not making much money you tend to learn the real value of your work and money. Then again, some people go the other way and lose their minds when they finally have some money and end up broke.
If you have kids, make them work for the things they want. Don't just give everything to them if you have the money to do so. Want a new game? Well, mow the lawn and pick weeds for 3 months.. or other such things.
