When a certain someone at the Thanksgiving table starts talking (not-worth-hearing-crap), I start a separate any old conversation with someone else near me about not-important-crap just to drown out the voice and distract everyone on the peripheral of the not-worth-hearing-crap to give them something else to listen to and join talking about if they wish. It may be rude, but I think it's necessary. I judge the not-worth-hearing-crap as foul depraved shit, it's not just me being manipulative. I don't spend time with certain people except on one or two holidays and I stop the not-worth-hearing-crap when I can.

True. Sometimes I also direct the blocking conversation to a person sitting right next to the one that talks not-worth-hearing-crap to start a new conversation. If it weren't for that one certain person, I'd be happy to just listen and not have to make any small talk.

Me: "Wow this wine has notes of grape and oak barrel, are you getting those tasting notes too?"
