People learn from observing the behavior of others. People used to act like they were in a movie and expected you to act that way too. They expected pretty women to be fainting damsels and were shocked when they pushed back like they had four older brothers. It goes even further back, to romance novels from the Victorian Era, and before the printing press there was storytelling.
