Because of his connections to (((intellectual, literary circles))) and the (((UK government))) Blair knew how things really worked behind the scenes. Aside from the futuristic setting and a few sci-fi and dramatic embellishments 1984 was an accurate depiction of Britain in the thirties and forties.
Its only gotten worse since then.
