Very cool. Please post a lot; maybe set up your own dedicated sub?
Wish I could get my wife interested in this site. She has our garage full of Quail and chickens. I have 6 cheeping behind me right now in the nursery pen
So neat!!
We have wild quail all over our yard. They are very entertaining. Currently have two dumb ass doves trying for a month to build a nest in the rafters of our patio cover. They were successful for a bit, but found a nest and two splattered eggs on the patio two days ago. Dogs lapped up the eggs, tossed the nest in a planter, and they are back at it again. Like why don’t they go in one of the many trees?
I hope to be able to post a few of my pics and/or videos. Setting up my own dedicated sub is out of my skill level mostly because the desire is not there lol.
lol well I know is experienced in both chickens and Poal
Good luck. Chickens are a lot of fun. Never heard of that breed you ordered. Pictures look kind of cool.
I can relate to not having the time to run a sub.
Not diverse enough.
My first batch of chicks I had two drowned in a shallow water dish they are stupid and will look for ways to die

That’s hilarious. I’m more worried about my dogs. It’s gonna be a long few weeks in the beginning lol.
Coons (the animal ones) will reach right thru chicken wire and grab them and eat them alive without getting them through the chicken wire.
🤔
We’ve set up the
Plan on moving it around the walnut orchard (about an acre), and will reinforce the sides with chicken wire that will extend from the bottom portion of the sides out in the hopes of preventing digging creature. Also plan to get game cameras and set them up to monitor and learn. Unfortunately, we have possum, skunk, fox, gopher, coyote, etc. we are fenced on the property with a pack of dogs, so keeping food gets crossed.
Sounds like you're on top of it then, good luck!
I'm interested in hearing more about Alumicoop. I appreciate the link. What were the factor(s) driving the decision on that specific product? I setup for our birds, and while inexpensive to setup and spacious, there are some long term drawbacks so I'm always keeping my eyes open for options to consider.

The factors driving the decision, as we did look at the geodisks, as well, were durability (we have a pack of dogs and some of them are incorrigible when it comes to wildlife lol) and other wildlife that loves chickens, the idea that it has no floor and sits right on the earth, and the ability to move it around. It was, however, not cheap. We are likely going to pick up another coop from for a rooster with some (hopefully) broody hens. We’d like to be able to have multiple generations of chickens from our own stock.
Awesome! I love chickens. The best part is when they realize you are the one feeding them, they get real friendly and happy to see you. Hopefully you're in the know on pasty butt. Its the only down side I've dealt with when raising chicks.

Well I am now, lol. Thanks, fren. The more I know the sooner, the better.
Glad to help! The best way I've found to clean them is just a little cotton swab with warm water on it. Swab it until it comes off. Luckily it's just for the first few weeks. As far as I've seen, there is no avoiding it. The only thing is it seems to effect different breads more or less. Wyandottes had a pretty low rate but we just got some Black Australorps and those were really bad with pasty butt. They all grew up healthy but it seemed like I had to clean every single chick at some point.
Just had a friend complaining about how her australorps were picking on her Pablo potatoes lol. Don’t know anything about either of those breeds.
But yes, I read about pasty butt today and exactly what you describe is exactly what I was planning. Warm water swab, dry butt, and I saw some advice indicating to put a dap of vaseline on the butt after it’s clear and dry to prevent more build up. Definitely a learning experience.
Chicks were not shipped today per the hatchery. Expecting they will be shipped tomorrow. We’ll see. It will be a transcontinental ride for them, so I am already feeling their pain haha.
Re-sized the brooder today (think it was too large for 12 chicks), and lined it with puppy pee pads (over top of the brown paper and paper towel lining (I know overkill). I’ve read, and again, do not know as I’ve never done this before, that it is difficult for them to navigate through pine shavings for the first few days.
Also read their initial water should be the same temp as the brooder (95-100F), with a couple of tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar per quart of water to help with rehydration and pasty butt.
Thoughts?
Do the black chickens lay negro eggs like a brown cow releases chocolate milk?
>Do the black chickens lay negro eggs like a brown cow releases chocolate milk?>>
Of course. Why else would I get them? Planning to use the eggs to throw at random niiggers.
Pick them up from post office quickly. Shipping chicks is rough on them, expect some losses. Good on you for getting some going though. If you'd like any advice just ask away ...

I am available at the drop of a hat, so I’ll get over to the post office asap once I get the call. And thank you for the offer of advice. I am certain I will take you up on it.
Attempted to pm you, can't tell if it sent or not. Crappy internet here where I live. At any rate, here is what I messaged you, in the event the pm didn't send, as I couldn't tell, lol:
Thank you for the offer of asking about raising chicks. Turns out, yes,I DO have questions! lol.
Got 15 chicks 11 days ago. 14 survived after the first night.
From these 14, one has failed to thrive, and I fear she may be gone by morning. She had/still has pasty butt. Their water gets a splash of raw ACV each time i change it. I remove the poop each day appropriately. She has not grown much, doesn't move much, and her down doesn't look like the others'.
I clean the brooder every 3 days, I clean the water and food 3-4 times/day. They are now spending hours outside during the day in the big girl coop. Ambient temperature where I live is over 90 degrees during the day, so warm enough.
I tried feeding her some raw egg today. She seemed to take in a little bit. I make sure she takes in water multiple times during the day.
Don't know if she has coccidiosis, or some other issue. So far, none of the other chicks seem to be affected.
Any thoughts/insights/experience are SUPER appreciated.
Thanks, friend.
I didn't get a PM. Congrats on your shipment! My wife says if you have a chick with pasty butt you need to get rid of the butt feathers that are holding / trapping the poo. Or, the situation will happen over and over. The chick will yip taking out the feathers but do it like a band aid. Wife said that's how she learned how to do it. Let us know how it goes!
Hope your chicks are doing well! Forgot to mention it before but if you can, stay away from Tractor Supply feed. Lots of news reports of troubles. Keep us posted!

Thank you! We lost the chick I was most worried about, but 13 are doing GREAT! Lost a total of two. One the first night we had them, and the second one a week later. We have organic starter feed from Modesto Milling that seems to be working out great. Gotta figure out how to post a video (I’m super tech dumb), of their first full day in the coop outside yesterday. You know you’re getting old when “bird watching” is entertaining lol, but we are having a blast with the chickens this far. Again, thank you so much, I appreciate the guidance.
