My dad's best friend, a family friend, a man who was there throughout my childhood at sporting events etc. was just diagnosed with stage 4, metastatic prostate cancer.

It's real tough on my Father, I can hear it in his voice and I don't know what to do. I'm trying to keep my distance to not annoy him if he needs time to talk with the friend.

sorry to hear this news. for what it's worth, I think you're taking the correct path - just stay behind and let your dad know you're there when needed. I'm sure he knows this already, but sometimes a reassured 'im here' can go a long way
