almost tried mint, but i was so happy with kubuntu, i can bear the thought of changing yet. I am feeling comfortable here.

You can install other GUI's (window managers) even in kubuntu. If you are running into slowdowns because of graphics. Try xfce or lxde. They are a lot more stripped down but still work really well.
