this while sometimes it can be hard to track down the original, passing around adulterated memes can do more harm than good.

This too. The point being that if you start pushing edited versions of things, as the reality - whether it true or not is unknown at this point - with no evidence then that forever ruins that piece of information in the future, regardless of if it ends up being proven or not.
