Leaded fuel had countless negative side-effects - especially to engines - have you ever heard of "sludge"?

I'm not sure I agree with that, aviation piston planes still use lead. They wouldn't be using lead if it sludged up their engines. Iirc lead is better for the valves.

Yes. It acts as a lubricant. At high temperatures, it works better than oil. Older vehicles that were built for leaded fuel have gasket and valve problems when they are run on unleaded fuel.
