It’s a bit of a pipe dream, but the ultimate solution is peer to peer social networking software. No central control. Only a standard protocol and the software to operate by it. Content, users, etc. would be verified by a blockchain.

It would be loaded with spam and imposters, so we would need networks of trust built into the protocol to know who is legit and who is sketchy, but it could work and it could not be controlled by anyone short of China style blocking at the network level.

There are various projects aiming to get this working, but since no one would control this and profit from it they are all open source and developed on volunteered time (as far as I know).

They’ve been talking about this for at least five years now. Hopefully it starts to take off eventually. Supposedly gab is blockchain or so he claimed.
