Although Hanussen claimed to be a Danish aristocrat, he was in fact a Moravian Jew, born as Hermann (Herschel Chaim) Steinschneider.
Many of them managed to squeeze in, especially since not all of the officers in Hitler's army shared his sentiment about jews. For them it was enough that they declared themselves loyal to Germany, and they would stand up and protect them from being taken into camps. Who knows what kind of damage they caused in the background.
