The 1980s were a kind of rebirth of pop music, as powerful in its own way as what happened in the 1960s. The songs of the 80s became more complex, more meaningful, than the pop crap of disco that polluted the 1970s. People were sick of the glitter and the platform shoes. They adopted short hair, simple clothing styles. The girls wore long dresses that evoked the style of the early 1960s. The boys were clean-cut.

You also had the creeping emergence of faggotry in the form of Boy George and Michael Jackson, but it was an undercurrent. You didn't see that in Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel or Sting, in Huey Lewis or Dire Straits. It was also a time of resurgence for older musicians who had started in the 1960s, and who got their second wind in the 1980s. The Rolling Stones did some great work in the 80s. So did Paul McCartney and George Harrison. Santana made a comeback (not that he ever really went away).

I listen to what passes for pop music today and I just shake my head.

When you mention Boy George it reminded me of the New Romantic scene he came from. A lot of bands were all from the same faggot nightclub in London (Boy George was a coat checker there) and they all idolized David Bowie who in turn used them and stole some of their ideas.

The best of them were Visage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMPC8QJF6sI

New Romantics Documentary (warning ghhay as fuick) Still an interesting take on pop in the 70's/80's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idkdr1s64HA

What is wrong with Michael Jackson? He fucking crushed it.

I dunno man. I like the folk and classic rock of the 60s and 70s but a lot of the 80s seem pretty cringe

what?

Don't forget metal beyond what the 70's produced in led zep and foghat; bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax led the day with 4 different styles of metal.

I always find me muttering to myself how I miss the 90's.

I'm not big on 80s music, maybe some metal and punk. But I was born in the 80s. 90s music was sweet though. Got involved in the music scene in early 2000s, but went to shows in the 90s too. Everything went Downhill by the 2010s.

Don't feel too bad. I listen to a lot of country and rock music that spans decades. Not just one or two songs mind you but a lot. I very very rarely will enjoy music that is generated today.

I find lots of 80s music to be optimistic and even celebratory. Almost any 80s song on youtube has lots of comments from people wishing they would have been alive in that decade and/or wondering what the heck happened to music since then.

Yeah and some of us wondered what happened way earlier. But really I like the hair bands. I remember first hearing g&r on klol out of houston at midnight. It was like they bought rock and roll back. I dont expect many of yall to agree but you werent there.

I was there.
