That's the only reason i can think of they still have them on, their brain is permanently messed up and can no longer detect the mask on their heads. Either that, or the CO2 being expelled and recirculated back into their lungs is getting them high and they dont realize the mask has become their new drug of choice

What you described is exactly what divers experience when they go too deep breathing compressed air. It's called nitrogen narcosis and they say it feels like they're drunk. They get loopy, confused, and have a harder time understanding things.
