I rated top level submission for this position but got kicked anyway. I suspect that the aforementioned Veteran's Preference got me.

Working for the feds would suck anyway. Go for a state job. A lot of the same bennies with less BS.

Yeah, I need to check out the Ohio job boards again. They weren't very useful last time I looked, tho.
