This has limits as well. Successful parasitism requires the host to stay alive and even thrive long term. Short terms, yes, long term this strategy is not effective for parasitic species.

Beatings only address the desired outcomes not the long term programming of the nervous system. It does have impact on it, for sure, but realistically beatings just make your slaves hate you. Parasitic species maneuver their host into liking their enslavement by slowly changing the variables that guide them a little bit at a time.
Does that make sense? That is my take on it.
