Agreed, even a decade into running Linux at home and being a sysadmin for dozens of RHEL nodes I still get surprised at how complicated a simple request can be.
simple request
Such as?
Here' my most recent one:
Users from different domains on the same active directory want to login to a Linux console, but don't want to prefix the username with a domain.
The Pam module we're using allows us to set a default domain for users to avoid the prefix, but not provide an array of domains to check for the account.
It's more about having to get in the weeds and figure it out, perhaps contribute back to get the feature you need. Most lack the skill or knowledge of tools like git...
Most Win users don't know anything about network (besides opening their wireless menubar and entering a password), but those who take an extra step to try Linux will eventually get to learn more stuff.
