I'm a full blown meeting attending alcoholic. For me, it was a really big hurdle, getting past the obsession. I knew I didn't want to drink, and why, but I couldn't make myself not do it.
What it took was making a promise to someone, that I could make it 30 days. Somewhere in that 30 days (or maybe the next 30), the compulsion to do it just kind of dropped away.
I still have to keep my mind in the game, and remember that I don't want to go back to who I was, but it's gotten a lot easier. And I feel a lot better.
Remember: You're no use to the ethnostate as a drunk.
