Even bigger queens than them are police departments. As much as 70+% of a cities budget goes to police. Mostly in pensions. A lot will earn 90% of pay at retirement. Twenty years with a city, then off to the county sheriffs or another city to get another pension. Lots of double dipping. Be nice to get two retirement checks to retire off on. Plus SS.
Rural and small towns are pretty much volunteer where the community kicks in money to keep equipment and firehouses going. If you’re known for not kicking in some green you might not see a fire truck and crew arrive in time. Oooops.
