So shines a good movie in a wicked world.
First out of Pinocchio, Winnie the Pooh, Robinhood, Peterpan and Alice and Wonder / Through the looking glass, Willy Wonka is the first that I would still recommend the movie. It is mostly the book and a gem. However there are some particular differences. And one thing that is particular is that supposedly the original author of the book was so "dissatisfied" with the movie he refused to let them make a movie of the book's squeal.
First most of the book is actually similar to the movie. The oompa loompas are actually only knee height. The first striking difference is Willy Wonka seems to be a practicer of Moloch worship. The factory is actually underground. Far underground. So underground tunnels. The oompa loompas are actually imported / smuggled in foreigners in secret. And third it is made clear many times that kids are often in the ingredients of the chocolate.
First is when the fat kid augustus gloop gets sucked up into the fudge making machine to be made into fudge. The oompa loompas make a whole song about cutting him up, slicing him up, boiling him up and making fudge out of him. They say "he'll be altered". When he actually leaves the factory later, he goes from being fat to thin.
Next is when they are in the tunnel (which isn't a psycho show, it's just a white tube that goes really fast / is dark often). They pass by a lot of doors. One has different creams in it, ie vanilla cream or strawberry cream (clearly making it obvious the cream is made of the word before it), however the last one is 'hair cream'. The people are confused and ask "hair cream...?". Willy Wonka just says "nevermind that". The next room is a beans room, elements for cooking with. Ie one is coffee beans, cocao bean and the last is "has beans". One of the kids ask "... what's that...?" and Willy Wonka say "Oh well that's you my dear kid! but nevermind!".
The first major event that was out of order was being introduced to the elevator. The elevator was actually introduced mid story (in the factory) instead of at the end.
The other major element that was different was that Charlie never went into the fizzy lifting room. They talked about it and what happens in it / when you drink it but never actually went in. So Charlie never ever actually did anything 'wrong'. I'm not sure why they added it in to the movie. Maybe they wanted more screen time? Maybe they wanted to just explore the room when the book only talked about it? Maybe they didn't want Charlie to be 'perfect' / add another morality issue at insult to the book?
Also the oompa loompas did sing in the book for each kid (except Charlie because he didn't disappear / get taken away). However the words are a lot different (and song a lot longer). It seems one song from the movie is heavily inspired / taking from the book's words. The rest seem to just take on some of the main ideas / concepts.
The book is overall better of course, but the movie is a gem too.
