My guess is he's in iso/ solitary confinement. That is torture after awhile , I'm sure terrible food , probably sleep deprivation too

Yes but not to this degree. Prisons and jails are usually randomized reading based on security level of the inmate. For example even minimum sec. prisons label each prisoner on their behavior etc. While not likely a problem ins min sec as it is in max sec prisons where it must be absurd.
