If we get in a verbal argument and you punch me you have escalated violence. If I punch you back I have met it proportionately. Everyone kinda gets that unless you're really fucking retarded.

What people get all stupid and dicey around, is in same situation is if after I punch you back you pull out a knife and attempt to stab me you have again escalated violence. But on the other hand if in response to your knife I take out a gun and shoot you many people will say I in turn also escalted. Nope, because it's proportionality to capability and intent.

When we were both just punching each other (assuming we're talking bar fight style and nothing crazy) no reasonable person thinks the intent or capability of either of us is much beyond a some bruises and bruised egos. Once you tried to stab me you showed both intent to cause life threatening injury and capability by having the knife. I don't have to wait to actually be stabbed and bleed out to defend myself, I can shoot you.

If an active gunman has shown capability and intent in any circumstance, and lethal response is warranted.

Police have been trained to escalate situations so giving them dumb fucks a gun is issue enough. I carry my gun even where laws suggest it's illegal. If a gunman bring a gun with bad intentions and begins to act upon them bad intentions then use your gun because shooting a bad guy is faster then darling 911 alo e not to mention the response time is horrid is locations where cops don't do there job like Uvalde or in a town like where I grew up cops lived hr away and were on call after 5 and there was no night cops.

Escalation (of force) is a thing. Police are trained on the "use of force". Generally the police are only supposed to present a level of force equal to the level of resistance to effect an arrest or stop a deadly threat.

They need to be able to articulate why an otherwise excessive level of force was necessary. An ordinary citizen isn't typically held to that standard.

If someone is presenting/using a firearm to potentially kill your or someone else, the use of force continuum is already escalated to the highest level.

This gets muddy in a situation where a person who is very angry/upset quickly moves a hand to a pocket. Up until that point you've likely had no justification to present a deadly weapon, and you don't necessarily know what the person is fishing around for in there pocket.. maybe a gun, maybe just a phone.

I am not providing legal advice here, just offering insight on the subject of "use of force"/escalation.
