I called the Fish and Wildlife departments for six southeastern states, not one of them has a hunting season for sandhill cranes, and a few of them suggested they are protected.

Those of you suggesting they were delicious are either lying or breaking the law.

Sandhill Cranes are a migratory bird so the dates fall under federal guidelines. Some states may not have set the date for 2023 yet. Or...maybe they just didn't want you to hunt their crane. Try these and you can research the rest:

192 of 254 counties have Sandhill Crane seasons.

Sandhill cranes have been hunted in Kansas since 1993 and in the Central Flyway since 1961. Hunting is permitted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in nine of the 10 states in the Central Flyway.

$100,000 for a whooping crane penalty is far too much of a risk, I need to find a place with no overlap.

Learn your birds or use an outfitter/guide.

I wonder if a guide covers the hunting license fee as well. I would rather go to the Midwest than the southeast for safety reasons.
