I was 9. The eggs were burned. But the instant coffee tasted like liquid gold.

I wish all of you could have had great parents like mine. "Tahawus...Tahawus...", we chanted as we marched up that trail. We camped by Lake Tear of the Cloud, but we never made it to the summit of Marcy. We ran out of food and water. (and my sister's cat died. lol. Mitzy.)

Years later, I found out what "Tahawus" meant. It was the Iroquois name for Mt. Marcy. It means "CLOUD SPLITTER". Cloud-Splitter! ..how cool is that? Me and the wife and my kid sister made it to the summit. We dragged dad along with us. He made it most of the way, but he couldn't make it to the top. The last part was too steep. He was too old. But he waved at us as we climbed to the highest point in NY state. It was late August. We only stayed for a few minutes before we started back down the trail. It started to snow.

..fk.. what a great gift this life is.

That's what I said out loud after breaking camp and getting back on the trail. I looked up in time to see my dad glance at my mom as she nodded her head before dad backhanded me off my feet. My older brothers laughed and kicked me in the backpack before pulling me up by the extended hands and getting back on the trail. They knew I was just joking.
